  • Area Attractions
  • Beach:  The Big Island of Hawai'i has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! Many of the beaches have black sand, a result of volcanic eruptions in years past. The resort's beach features white sand and is located beside the South Tower. The beach offers a protected swimming lagoon. There are no life guards on duty, swimming is at your own risk. Beach gear can be rented on-site.
  • The Orchid Beachboys:  Decades ago, visitors to the islands were intrigued by the aloha, charm and warm hospitality of the Waikiki Beachboys. Their cultural knowledge, ocean skills and storytelling talents were legendary. This tradition -- and the spirit of old Hawaii -- thrives at The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii through the Orchid Beachboys program. The Orchid Beachboys are headquartered, naturally, at the resort's white sand beach in a thatch-roofed building, the Orchid Beach Club. Stop by to sign up for daily activities, ocean conditions, or to reserve a private beach cabana.
  • Shoreline Fishing Excursion:  Spend the morning learning and practicing local and Hawaiian shoreline fishing techniques from a double-hulled canoe in the calm, near shore waters along Mauna Lani Resort. Your Beachboy guide will fill you in on the favorite fish of Hawaiian royalty, why locals won't allow bananas aboard a fishing boat, the Hawaiian kapu system which protected certain fish during breeding seasons, and other interesting cultural anecdotes. A great activity for father/son bonding, or anyone who loves to fish. Duration 2 hours.
  • Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park:  Located a 2-1/2 hour drive from the resort, on the southern tip of the island, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is home to Kilauea, a 40 million year old, 4000 foot volcano whose January 1983 eruption continues today with lava running down to the sea creating a spectacular sight. A public observatory stands on the rim of the volcano's crater.
  • Snorkeling and Scuba:  Guests can enjoy snorkeling around the resort area. Equipment for 2 hours is included in the daily resort fee. Scuba diving is also available.
  • Whale Watching:  Hawai's is the winter home of the Humpback Whale, with its population around the Hawaiian islands estimated to be about 3000. They can often be seen frolicking in front of the resort, from mid-December to February. There are also numerous whale whatching tour operators in the area. Whale watching tours are available December through April.
  • Kayak Adventure:  Embark upon a two-hour kayaking/snorkeling adventure right off the hotel's white sand beach. Your guide will lead you out into pristine Pauoa Bay, and you'll paddle along the beautiful Mauna Lani Resort shoreline. Terrific snorkel spots abound, and you'll marvel at underwater arches, Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), eagle rays, tropical reef fish and other marine life of the coral reef ecosystem. Learn about the ancient Hawaiians who called this shoreline home, and the legends they handed down through the generations.
  • Surf Lessons:  Surf's up! Our Orchid Beachboys are master surfers, and love to introduce novices to the sheer pleasure of standing up on a board for the first time, and to help experienced surfers improve their skills. There are two great surf spots in front of the hotel, which are rarely crowded. Discover a truly Hawaiian sport, while learning water safety tips and rules of etiquette to keep you safe in the waves.
